Travel Insurance

When you’re away from your home country for any period of time, it is important to cover yourself with travel insurance. Try to think of it this way: when you’re in your own country, you have house and contents insurance, medical insurance, vehicle insurance and often life insurance but once you cross the border into a foreign land, these insurances generally are unable to cover you. Having travel insurance is just like having the same security you have at home whilst you’re away.

A trip to a second or third world country can pose a myriad of potential problems that can be helped with the right travel insurance policy. If you plan on visiting Africa, for instance, many of the countries have inefficient medical systems, a lack of educated medical professionals, faulty transport, dire living conditions, the danger of wild life, petty criminals and pick pockets struck by poverty, the list can go on. That’s not to say that Africa should not be a destination that you plan on visiting. It is beautiful and a life-changing experience visiting Africa but travel insurance is paramount.

Travel insurance is particularly important when it comes to medical treatment. Most likely the highest valued possession you have is your life. Most people will do anything to survive if their life is in danger. The biggest threat whilst travelling is the risk of getting killed or dying of illness. Travel insurance can support you in times of accident or illness and allows for you to receive as much medical attention as necessary to get you back on your feet again or will arrange for you to get sent home for care and if you’re in an accident or stranded somewhere that is difficult to access, travel insurance can organise for you to be airlifted to safety.

If your illness is more serious, you can rely on your travel insurance to get you sent home for care and if you’re in an accident or stranded somewhere difficult to access, travel insurance can organise for you to be airlifted to safety.

When you receive any travel insurance policy, you will be issued with the travel insurance company’s terms and conditions which should be adhered to if you plan on receiving stress-free compensation (or any compensation at all). If these terms and conditions are ignored and not met, the claims company has every right to deny you your compensation. For example, if you fall ill, in order to be compensated you must be treated by licensed medical personnel and you must provide your insurance company with proper documentation and receipts.

It pays to read your travel insurance policies and their small print. Travel insurance is a necessary travel accessory and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have bought a suitable package which you understand.
